General
Follow
all the general procedures for ensuring your safety
as you would at home
If
possible, always carry:
photo
ID (passport, driving license etc.)
address
and phone number of your hotel
a
map and a cell phone
After
arriving at your hotel, locate the nearest emergency
exit(s) to your room
Make
sure everyone in your party knows each other's
plans inc. the time they intend to return to the
hotel
If your
plans change, let the rest of your party know
or leave a message for them at your hotel
Never
leave drinks unattended in bars
Don't
accept drinks, rides or offers of a place to stay
from people you just met
Where
appropriate, try to respect local customs
Tipping
in restaurants and bars etc. is the norm here:
that polite person serving you is earning minimum
wage and relies on tips to make a decent living.
The convention is to tip about 15-20% of the total
bill |
Flying
Ensure
your travel documents, passports and tickets are
easily accessible and secure
Avoid
alcohol before and during flights: alcohol affects
people much faster at high altitude
Only
one piece of hand luggage and one personal item
(purse, laptop etc.) will be allowed
No
knives or knifelike items in hand luggage: the
term "knifelike items" includes every kind of
cutting instrument, including carpet knives, box
cutters and other folding or retractable blades,
regardless of blade length or composition
Items
such as straight razors, scissors, metal nail
files, and lighters must be checked and are not
permitted in the cabin
Do
not carry WRAPPED gifts in hand luggage: unidentifiable
items will be opened and thoroughly searched
Always
comply with requests from airport and aircraft
staff especially security staff
DO
NOT make jokes about carrying weapons, being
a terrorist etc. |
Driving
Always
carry a map with you
Avoid
roadside rest (picnic) areas, especially at night.
SLOW
DOWN: unfamiliar roads with different road markings
and signs to those you are used to require more
thinking time.
Never
drink and drive: if found to be driving under
the influence of alcohol and/or drugs you WILL
be arrested.
If stopped
by a State Trooper or Police Officer:
park off
the road if possible
switch
off your engine and open your window
place
your hands on the steering wheel so that they
are clearly visible to the officer. Listen carefully
to the officer and comply with ANY request he
makes (failure to do so is an offence and you
will be arrested for impeding an investigation).
Keep
a supply of small change in the car and be ready
to slow down and stop at toll booths. |
